漫画の1巻を原作とする。SF小説的な内容で、アメリカではビルボード誌のビデオ週間売上げ1位となる（1996年8月24日付）。全世界でのビデオ・DVDの売上は130万本（日本経済新聞 2002年7月21日付 朝刊）。続編は2004年公開の『イノセンス』である。

2008年に押井の新作映画『スカイ・クロラ』上映記念として本作のリニューアル版『攻殻機動隊2.0』を上映した。『2.0』では新作カットが使用され一部が3DCGとなり、さらに全体的な色調がブルー/グリーン系から、イノセンスと同様のアンバー（オレンジ）系となった。また音響がサラウンド（5.1ch/6.1ch）化され、キャストの一部・台詞・音楽・SEがリニューアルされている。SEに関してはアメリカのスカイウォーカー・サウンドの協力を得ている。
